Marionette Dolls Live At The National Underground from Thomas Grogan on Vimeo.
I started working on the song ‘Marionette Dolls’ sometime around the spring of 2008. Slowly but surely the words, chords, and changes came together over time. I basically split writing duties between my Gretsch Americana Series acoustic

and the Jackson Randy Rhodes Flying V.
The whole time though, I anxiously waited for what it would sound like being played on an electric guitar with a full band backing it.
When I got Felicity, I knew she would be perfect for this tune. When I first played it with Garrett and Chris, we all clicked instantly. And for proof, here is the recording of us jamming on it for I believe the 2nd time ever. Going back and listening to this is a trip, and as you can see, I don’t need to do too much talking at practice; just play. This file was aptly saved in my Garageband as ‘july10song2.’
Finally, here’s a neat little podcast about improvisation and its effects on the brain.
NIce tune, cool performance. What guitar are you playing live?
hey jeff, thanks for the comment. the guitar is a gibson-135. 1993 i believe, semi-hollow body with p90 pickups.
